- Carla J. Uphold, Accounting Assistant with the Regional Research Institute from 1974-2001 died June 30th after a lengthy illness. She was 60 years old. In 1967, Carla began as a secretary with the College of Business & Economics until 1974 at which time she began working at the Regional Research Institute with founding director, William H. Miernyk. Professionally, Uphold was Past President of the Morgantown Business and Professional Woman's Club, Inc., 1975-76, and 1986-87; the West Virginia Federation BPW Past President in 1988-89; and the "2000 Woman of the Year" award from the Morgantown Business & Professional Woman's Club, Inc. Carla retired from WVU and RRI in July 2001.
- Peter V. Schaeffer, WVU professor in the Division of Resource Management, has been elected president of the Southern Regional Science Association (SRSA). He is the third SRSA president from WVU. The SRSA is a multidisciplinary organization with members spanning 40 states and seven countries. Click here to read more.
- Bill Trumbull named interim dean of WVU's College of Business and Economics, effective July 1. Trumbull has been with WVU for 25 years and has been a faculty research associate with RRI since 1989.
- Ken Martis, 2007 CASE West Virginia Professor of the Year gives commencement speech, May 2008.
- Kudos to Robert Maxon who recently received the "WVU Foundation Award for Outstanding Teaching," 2008.
- The Sage Scientific Geography Series, vol. 1-10, edited by Grant I. Thrall, is the newest addition to the Web Book of Regional Science.

- Shaoming Cheng has accepted a position as Assistant Professor in the department of Public Administration at Florida International University and will assume his duties August 2008.
- Jinyang Deng, Assistant Professor of Recreation, Parks, Recreation and Tourism Resources, received the RRI AY 09/10 Seed Grant for his proposal entitled, "Linking Tourism Resources and Local Economic Development: A Spatial Analysis of West Virginia."
- Mary Lou Myer, Administrative Assistant, RRI, was the first recipient of the "William A. Schaffer Award" for distinguished service to regional science, 1986-2008. Click here for a pic of the event held at the Southern Regional Science Association's annual meetings in Washington, DC.
- Olivier Parent receives the Miernyk Research Excellence Medal, 2008 from Randy Jackson at the SRSA annual meetings held in Washington, DC. Click here for several pics of the event.
- Living in a coal-mining community may be hazardous to your health according to a new study by a WVU researcher. Michael Hendryx found higher rates of kidney and lung disease and high blood pressure in West Virginia's coal-producing counties. Click here for a West Virginia Public Radio Report.
