His research focuses on firms' location strategy and the location of economic activities, the reasons why some places prosper and thrive while others decline, the ways in which local areas may capture the benefits of desired development strategies, and how entrepreneurship replaces traditional production assets in economic development.
Honors and Awards:
Cheng was the 2006 recipient of the William H. Miernyk Research Excellence Award presented at the Southern Regional Science Association meeting in St. Augustine, FL, and the recipient of the 19th Charles M. Tiebout Prize in Regional Science presented at the Western Regional Science Association, 2005. He also won the APPAM Award for Best Dissertation in Public Policy and Management in Asia, 2005-2006.
